Making the decision to hire an in-home caregiver can be difficult. You've discussed all of the options with your aging parent or elderly loved one and family members regarding aging in place, assisted living facilities, or nursing homes and have come to the conclusion that hiring a caregiver is the best solution. Whether in Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Walnut Creek, or another nearby city in the Bay Area, there are a few questions that will help you with the decision.

First, how can you know if hiring a caregiver to come into your aging parent's home is the best option for your parent? Much of the decision is based on whether an aging loved one is healthy enough and stable enough to live in their own home. What are the senior's health conditions, and are there financial resources available? Also consider whether the home provides a safe environment, and how willing other family members are to help out when needed. Considering whether a parent' s life will be enhanced by having a caregiver, for not only care but also companionship, is important as well.

Is in home care for seniors expensive? Of course cost is a major concern for most families. In most cases when a doctor or physician deems a senior who lives alone needs skilled nursing care, Medicare usually covers the costs of these services. However, this is health service rather than personal care service. So, how much does personal care service cost considering insurance doesn't typically cover these costs? Generally speaking, the rate will range between $15 and $30 per hour depending on where you live. Personal care includes such assistance as help with bathing and hygiene, preparing meals, light housework, running errands, companionship, etc.

Should you monitor an in-home care provider, and if so, how? Considering not all home care agencies are reputable, it's a good idea to monitor the activities in your loved one's home on occasion. Whether yourself or a neighbor or friend, paying a little "unexpected" visit every now and then will allow you to get a glimpse of how well things are going. Additionally, you can often gauge the success by your aging parent's emotions or actions after a caregiver visit. Does mom seem happy and content, or does it seem she's upset, unhappy, or agitated when the caregiver has been there? Sometimes personalities clash or other issues arise, but it isn't a problem to get a new aide.
