With the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays coming up, many families in the Menlo Park and surrounding Bay Area think it's best to have family holiday celebrations at an elderly loved one's home, or a nearby family member's home to make it easier on their aging loved one. The fact is, if at all possible it's actually good for a senior to travel, whether flying or traveling by road. Getting out and about is good for those who are aging - emotionally, physically, and spiritually!
Senior travel is fairly common, and there are some things you can do to make it easier on everyone involved.
If you're flying, it's a good idea to check with the airline ahead of time to learn about any amenities that may make it easier on your aging loved one. Also be sure about the airline's policy regarding supplemental oxygen if your loved one requires it.
If you plan to stay at a hotel, condo, or other rental rather than a family member's home, do some research ahead of time regarding the facility's accessibility and other accommodations for seniors.
Always discuss your traveling plans with your loved one's physician so that he/she can address your concerns, and give you any advice or recommendations that may make it easier.
Many seniors take multiple prescription and OTC medications, and it's important you bring them along on the trip. When packing, place medications or other essential care items where you can easily access them. Also be sure to pack medications in a plastic zip bag or other container that's secure, and take along copies of prescriptions should something happen and you need to get medications filled. It's also smart to take along enough medication to last an extra week should any unforeseen circumstances prevent your returning home when you expected to.
Seniors who are able enjoy traveling, however it's important to make them as comfortable and safe as possible. If you're flying, what will be your method of transportation once you arrive at your destination? This is something else to consider, as you want transportation that's senior-friendly.
