At Care Indeed, our Palo Alto home caregivers know that there are certain things seniors expect as they age, whether right or wrong. Recently, we read an article regarding a study that was conducted a few years back about aging adults' expectations as they age, and how these expectations may affect their behavior in regards to seeking healthcare. Today, many seniors can enjoy high physical and cognitive function even in their 80s and 90s, however the negativity our society feels against aging can result in aging adults missing the opportunity to age gracefully, healthy - and happily.
In the study, it was found that about half of those who participated thought that developing aches and pains, insomnia, depression, and becoming less energetic and attractive was a normal or "expected" part of aging. Becoming dependent on others and losing their sexual drive were other areas most people thought were expected as they age. Because of this negative attitude, many aging individuals and seniors do not seek healthcare, thinking it is just a normal part of the aging process. Unfortunately, many seniors are missing out on a healthy, fulfilled, and active life because they are not seeking the help from their doctors that could result in many of these issues being resolved or modified.
It is unfortunate that society is so focused on trying not to age, to stay young forever. With the media always focusing on celebrities who are 70 and look 40, ads for "miracle" products that will take years off, and the general public's seeming dislike for anything to do with growing older, perhaps it is not the fault of our seniors that they have such low expectations when it comes to growing older, but the environment they live in. The fact is, seniors CAN enjoy their golden years without so many aches and pains, depression, sleeplessness, and other issues that seem to be a normal part of the aging process, if they will seek out the help of their doctors and other healthcare providers.
