Memory is something that affects all of us as we age; you know those times when you can't remember if you turned the coffee pot off before you left for work, or had to search for the car keys. While this is normal and happens more often as we age, there are ways to help seniors' minds stay sharper even into their 70s, 80s, and beyond. As home caregivers for Palo Alto seniors, we have a few tips that can help keep your elderly loved one's mind nimble.
First of all, keep your body healthy, as physical health affects brain health. Seniors should exercise, which simply means moving around a lot, whether you work in the flower bed, take the dog for a walk, or participate in a dance class for seniors. A healthy diet that includes lots of fruits and veggies, chicken and fish helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Get plenty of sleep, and if you smoke, stop. Tobacco contains toxins that not only affect your heart and lungs, but brain cells too. Keep stress in check as much as possible by meditating, doing yoga, or practicing deep breathing.
An active mind is a healthier mind. Just because you're aging doesn't mean it's time to stop learning or give your mind a break! Read, do crossword puzzles, even consider taking a college course or learning a new hobby such as crocheting, golfing, or painting. An active social life is important for keeping your mind active and engaged, so be sure to spend time with friends a couple of times each week. Watch a football game with friends if you're a fan, play cards, go out to dinner or a movie. Do anything that involves spending time with friends.
While it isn't always possible to prevent memory loss or even serious conditions such as Alzheimer's, it's important to do everything you can to keep your mind active! At Care Indeed, we offer a wide range of home caregiving services for those in Palo Alto and throughout the Bay Area, including dementia and Alzheimer's care.
Home care is derived from the belief that older adults should be able to age at home with the level of care they need to be safe and comfortable.
